Safety on Lake Wylie

The basics for a safe day on Lake Wylie.

Emergency on the water

Call 911 and give your nearest landmark (bridge, marina or access area). For a tow, not an emergency, call a towing service such as Sea Tow.

Who makes the rules

SC waters: SC Department of Natural Resources enforces boating law. NC waters: NC Wildlife Resources Commission. The Lake Wylie Marine Commission covers the whole lake. It's a joint body of York, Gaston and Mecklenburg counties that reviews no-wake zones and buoys and coordinates safety. It meets at 5 pm at the Centralina Regional Council office, 10735 David Taylor Dr, Charlotte, with a virtual option. Contact: [email protected].

Low water

When the lake drops below target, points and sandbars come up fast. Shallow-water groundings and prop damage spike during drought. Stay in marked channels, trim up in coves, and check the level before you launch.

No-wake zones

Idle speed near docks, ramps, marinas and bridges, and wherever official orange-and-white buoys mark a zone. Some buoys on the lake are private and don't create a legal zone, but slowing down near docks is still the right call.

Swimming

Check the Catawba Riverkeeper Swim Guide in season, and skip swimming for a day or two after heavy rain.

General information only. Check SCDNR, NCWRC and posted signs for current rules.

What the lake level numbers mean

A quick guide to the number Duke Energy reports.

100 means full

Duke Energy uses a simple scale where 100 means the lake is full. So 97.6 means the water is 2.4 feet below full.

Normal is about 97

Duke keeps the lake a few feet below full, around 97, so there's room for heavy rain.

Why it gets low

When it doesn't rain much, the lake drops. Duke manages Lake Wylie together with the other lakes on the Catawba River, so a dry spell lowers all of them. When it gets too shallow, some ramps close.

What you'll notice

NumberFeet below fullWhat it's like
99–1000–1 ftVery full. Watch for floating logs after storms.
97–98.91–3 ftNormal.
95–96.93–5 ftLow. Coves get shallow and boats run aground more.
Below 955+ ftVery low. Some ramps will likely close.

Check official readings in the Duke Energy Lakeview app or at 800-829-5253.
